Classic kaposi’s sarcoma in morocco: A clinicoepidemiological profile

Classic Kaposi’s sarcoma is a rare disease associated with infection by the human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8). There is insufficient data regarding this disease, especially in Morocco. This report examines a group of patients affected by classic Kaposi’s sarcoma assessed at the dermatology service of the University Hospital of Fes

Methods

We did a retrospective analysis of the patients presenting with classic Kaposi’s sarcoma confirmed by histology, received at the dermatology service between January 2007 and October 2012. We examined epidemiological and clinical data and assessed response to treatment

Findings

We identified 27 cases, of whom 92.6% were male. The average age of the beginning of the disease was 62.8 years with an extended period of consultation (40 months on average). We noted cases that have been aggravated because of long-term corticosteroid therapy, and also because of concurrent viral or bacterial infection and one a case of classic Kaposi’s sarcoma which required amputation of the affected limb. Affection mucosa was observed in 24% of cases, one case was located in the anal region. Visceral disease was observed in 30% of cases in the muscle, spleen, and adrenal gland. Lymphoedema was associated with 70%. Two cases were associated with squamous cell carcinoma and one case with celiac disease. 68% of patients were followed for an average period of 18 months. 32% of them had stable disease, 8% had progressive disease, and 20% were cured after an average of 5 months
